Cool it Kyle Busch

May 8, 2008
Lisa Fowler - SCR

I have tried all week to hold back my feelings about the Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. incident at Richmond Saturday night. I felt that everything had been said that could possibly be said, maybe not.

I have certain websites that I trust and read faithfully each day to keep informed on the racing news. One of these finally triggered my need to express my thoughts on the situation. When I saw Kyle Busch at the top of the "Power Rankings", it made me wonder just what is wrong with the world today.

I know that in the grand scheme of life, racing does not hold a great deal of importance.  The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the troubled economy, the presidential election, the skyrocketing price of gasoline and the high crime rates are just a few of the issues that we are facing that should be of great concern to everyone.

Most people in the world do not even know who Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are. I know that sounds strange to those of us that live, breath, eat and sleep racing but the fact is that especially NASCAR racing is pretty much an American past-time. When the world is facing so many huge problems, why should we place so much importance on this seemingly trivial event?

What bothers me about the attention given to Kyle Busch is the fact that I see it as reinforcing what most of us see as very bad behavior (all you Kyle Busch fans may as well stop reading right now so I don't have to spend the rest of my week deleting your nasty emails).

Kyle Busch seems to enjoy pissing everyone off. He takes great pleasure in being booed and tends to grow more arrogant with each controversy that he causes. Had it not been for his run-in with Steven Wallace in the Nationwide Series race on Friday night, it might have been easier to overlook what he did on Saturday night as "just hard racing."

Looking back, maybe Steven Wallace should have pulled Busch into his car by his helmet and given him the pounding that he deserved. I just don't see Kyle ever being the kind of person that I would want my sons to look up to or my daughters to marry.

No matter how much talent he has or thinks he has, there is no excuse for being a jerk. I wonder how many wins or how many championships it would take to make it worth having all the fans hate you. My feeling is that he will not last long in NASCAR. Everyone will soon grow tired of his attitude of winning at all costs. There are many drivers out there that could have had much greater success if they had not chosen to be good people first. You hear them say all the time that they give others the same respect that they want to receive. Since Mr. Busch does not seem to grasp this concept, I doubt he will be a driver that anyone wants to see succeed. Success in racing is measured by many things, and wins is just one of them.
