Impressive/Unimpressive: Desert Heat

April 14, 2008

Joe Jacobs – SCR

Impressive:

Jimmie Johnson: He’s back but in reality they have not been anywhere. They did not have more gas than everyone else; they just knew they could go for it because everyone else would not. They can beat you by domination, in the pits, or with gas mileage. I still think this is the best team in NASCAR.

Mark Martin: I thought Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) was junk, it seemed like Dale Earnhardt Jr. would blow up and crash out week after week in 2007. Martin was amazing Saturday night; he looked like Mark Martin of old. I commend him and that team for the great job and if given the chance next time I bet they would not pit, is cost them the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: He is with out a doubt the most consistent driver in NASCAR. He had his sixth top 10 finish of 2008 Saturday night. But the team also seems to have one small problem. It is not a new problem it also happened at DEI, crew chief Tony Eury Jr. seems to have the cars off at the wrong times, when other teams are racing for the checkers.

David Reutimann: Reutimann has not put big numbers up on the board this season, however he has put not one team in the top 35, but now he has put two teams in the top 35. That is amazing when you think about it. Now he can concentrate on car set up during practice, which means top tens are not far behind.

NASCAR: For not throwing a bogus caution to make the race outcome different, For once you made the correct decision. Let the race decide itself not someone in a booth.

Unimpressive:

NASCAR: For not taking a strong stance on the Drug policy. NASCAR has a knack for waiting until it’s too late to act on anything. Would it hurt to allow an independent body come in and perform random drug tests each and every week? The Aaron Fike situation did not have any visible damage. What if the next time NASCAR is not so lucky? Someone could get seriously injured or killed and America will forget about steroids and start talking about drug addicted NASCAR drivers.

Ryan Newman: Mr. Pole Winner is back, but Mr. Newman just has one horrible run after another. He might win a bunch of poles but races are a whole different animal.

Matt Kenseth: This is a running theme but when a Cup Champion comes on the radio and said, “If we had done our job” after he crashes in to the wall with a car that is un-drivable something is horribly wrong. Hit and miss each week is not Kenseth style.

FOX: Probably for the first time in the history of racing broadcasts that the green flag was not shown on live TV. PATHETIC! The Red Sox vs. Yankees game is important to a lot of people but FOX has other networks it could and should have been moved to. They have moved more than one NASCAR race in their years of coverage (or lack there of…).
