Gotta Love this Sport

January 28, 2008

Lisa Fowler - SCR

There is no better sport in the world than NASCAR racing. I know that many people question the validity of calling racing a sport. Even more question the fact that NASCAR is and has always been a sport ruled by one family, the Frances. Many see it as a family dynasty ruled by a dictator with absolute power.

In this time of personal freedom and the value placed on individual rights, it seems somewhat archaic to have any organization that does not allow those involved to have a vote on every issue that comes up.

I am certain that many of the most devoted fans have questioned some of the decisions made by NASCAR over the past few years. It seemed that what had worked well for many years was being changed just for the sake of change.

The fans in the south wondered why we needed to build tracks and move races from the tried and true southern regions to the unexplored markets of the West Coast and Northeast. Why close down historic venues like Rockingham and North Wilkesboro to move races to California and New Hampshire.

The drivers, owners and crews have expressed their concerns over the new COT (Car of Tomorrow) when the older cars were running great and most owners had spent tons of money to develop those models.

Those of us that watch the races on TV certainly have questioned the decision to contract with ESPN and ABC when FOX, TNT and NBC had done such a wonderful job with their broadcasts.

We wondered if the days of “creative thinking” by the crew chiefs and engineers would be a thing of the past with the COT rules that seemed to be etched in stone. NASCAR really came down hard on a few teams last season for infractions that seemed no one knew were against the rules.

We saw drivers penalized and demoralized for showing their emotions or letting an unacceptable word slip (never mind that they had just hit the wall at 200 mph). They were expected to smile for the camera and answer the same stupid questions 100 times without showing any anger or frustration.

I have had many friends tell me that they have lost interest because of the commercialization of the sport. Many lost interest due to the drivers all seeming to be too vanilla, we need a variety flavors to keep life interesting. Many have stopped watching because the schedule has changed to accommodate the viewers out West and those times didn’t fit well into our southern lifestyle schedules.

Well, I am just here to say “Way to go NASCAR.” One wonderful thing about there being a ruling dictator is that it takes only that one person to implement change. Brian France, as his father before him and his father before him, has shown himself to be a fearless leader. I know that Brian had big shoes to fill and there were probably times that he questioned his own ability to fill those shoes. I think with his “State of the Sport” address this week, he has shown himself to be not only a true leader but a considerate and fair human being.

With so many recent changes, he realized that we were all left with our heads spinning. For the coming season, the changes being made all seem to be very positive.

The start times will be earlier, better for the East coast fans.

There will be more leniency on fines and penalties, allow some creativity.

The monies paid for fines will go to the NASCAR Foundation for the various charities.

SCR is looking for writers in all the series we cover, if interested email us at scr@stockcarreview.com to receive further information.

The drivers are being told that they should be themselves and show their emotions, no more vanilla.

Even the TV stations seemed to have listened to the fans; Dale Jarrett will join ESPN as a broadcaster (Sorry Rusty Wallace, but I had been hoping for this).

As we get into the 2008 season, we will see how it all plays out. I hope that those of us who have remained loyal will have so much to be excited about that we can reach out to those who have defected and share with them how wonderful it can be to have one with absolute power as long as that one is willing to listen to the legions. Thanks Mr. France.
