The 2008 Cup Champion Is?

January 24, 2008

With the new season only three weeks away and the cold winter soon to fade, the sounds of bump drafting and restrictor plates are in the not to distant future. It’s time to discuss who’s going to win the 2008 Sprint Cup.

Jimmie Johnson: That’s right the two time defending champion will be in the running again this season. It’s his to lose, he has his team intact. He knows how to win the Chase by either dominating it from the beginning or playing catch up like he did two years ago. Is he superman, no he showed he is not bullet proof in the later part of the regular season. But who is to argue with a team that has won everything there is to win the last two seasons. Look for the 48 team to be near or at the top all year baring any unforeseen changes in luck or crew.

Jeff Gordon: If not for Jimmie Johnson’s amazing Chase last season, Gordon would have won his fifth Cup. This year will be no different for Gordon. He will be the driver to beat hands down. What else does he have to prove besides wining a 5th championship, then a 6th and 7th, and dare I say 8th? Gordon is still young in the sport of NASCAR; however he is not getting any younger in years. This year with in reason could be his last at the top of his game. There is not a doubt in my mind that when it comes down to Homestead he will be with in striking distance of that elusive fifth title.

Tony Stewart: Yes I said Tony Stewart, he had an off year in 2007 by his standards and he did not perform as well in the Chase as expected. The switch to Toyota might keep him off everyone’s list to be in the running for a third title. I would beg to differ; he after all is Tony Stewart and is more capable to adapting to any kind of car than any other driver. The Toyota switch will not slow Stewart down when he normally gets hot, expect him to get hot and stay that way until the end of the season.

Matt Kenseth: He is always the quiet one, the one who lays back, the on you don’t expect to be there at the end but always ends up in the top 5. This year will be no different. However I expect him to run for the Cup and he has a great chance to win. The change in crew chief might slow him down and it could derail his run. If he doesn’t win the Cup this could be his last year with Jack Roush. Kenseth is not going to stay around and watch his career slowly fad away. I look for him to jump ship. But until then I think he is a serous contender for the cup.

Those are the usual suspects however there are two dark horse drivers that could surprise everyone and steal the cup away from those four.

Clint Bowyer: Bowyer finally got his first win last year during the Chase and then he had a great run during those final 10 races. If he can keep that momentum going for the whole season, he can jump up and shock the world and steal his first title. Bowyer is extremely talented and if his equipment can stay under him, the sky is the limit.

Kyle Busch: New team, new attitude but same Kyle Busch, He has more talent than probably anyone in the garage area. He should have won a ton of races but his eagerness and aggressiveness has come to hurt him. However with the leadership of J.D. Gibbs, the new Toyota and his new attitude I look for Kyle to do extremely well in 2008 and he is only a dark horse because he is going to a new team, and his attitude problem. He could dominate if he only keeps his attitude in check.
