A Look Ahead... The 2008 Rookie Class

December 10, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

With the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season fast approaching, the next group of rookies are ready to take to the track, which leads me to the question… Who will be next to take the sport by storm?

The class of rookies in 2008 will include Jacques Villeneuve, Patrick Carpentier, Sam Hornish Jr., Dario Franchitti and Regan Smith. With the majority of them being stars of the many open wheel series around the world (Smith is the one driver that is not).

Three former Indy 500 champions, the defending IRL champion and a former Formula 1 champion will try their luck at NASCAR next season. And each of them has very limited experience in stock cars and that in itself will cause problems.

With all that hardware that they bring and all the expectations they have I still don’t see any of these drivers stepping up and having a great rookie year like Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson have had in the past.

Jacuques Villeneuve will race for Bill Davis Racings (BDR) third team next year. In 2007 BDR did not see many bright spots with their other two teams and it could be a lot of the same in ’08, how wise can adding a third team really be?  Villeneuve might have an Indy 500 Championship and Formula 1 Championship but I don’t expect he will get much respect or TV time next season.

Patrick Carpentier will be behind the wheel of the No. 10 Dodge Fielded by Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM). GEM has not had a win in cup since 2006. The 10 car could not make a majority of the races in ’07 and now the team brings in a rookie with a famous name and ties to the new majority owner and expects results. Don’t look for or expect much out of this team in 2008. They need points and experience and don’t have either.

Sam Hornish Jr. will have a ride in the newly reformed No. 77 car owned by Roger Penske. Penske tried the third car a few years ago and it failed horribly. The No. 77 team will probably get the owner points of the No. 2 team; this will guarantee that Hornish will make the first five races. For all the Kurt Busch fans lets hope that Hornish doesn’t bring down the team like Brendan Gaughan did a few years ago.

Dario Franchitti takes over the No. 40 Dodge fielded by Chip Ganassi next year. Juan Pablo Montoya who was a rookie in 2007 had decent success in his rookie season. He had a win and a few good runs but other than those small steps the team over all struggled and with another new driver added to the mix, the troubles should continue.

Regan Smith has the best chance to do well next season but don’t expect it. He will be taking over a fourth care at Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) in 2008. For Smith to see success DEI’s engine problems need to be fixed and Mark Martin needs to be easily accessible to help Smith. Having Martin on the team is a plus and gives Smith the best chance of rookie success in 2008. He did a decent job running a limited schedule in the No. 01 Chevrolet last season. If DEI needs can fix all the problems they have then perhaps Smith would have a chance.

So who will be the Rookie of the Year (ROTY) in 2008? A simple formula will decide it. It will be the driver who makes the most starts and finishes the most races, who that will be is anybody’s guess.
