Impressive/Unimpressive: California Heat

September 4, 2007

Joe Jacobs – SCR

Impressive:

Jimmie Johnson: Winning and securing the top seed in the chase will make him a force to recon with. Looks like NASCAR may have the first repeat champion since Jeff Gordon did it in 1997 and 1998.

Carl Edwards: Momentum is on his side as he has had back-to-back top five finishes. Carl might be struggling in the Busch series, but he is stepping up his game in Cup. He is the only driver that could win two championships in one season.

Bobby Labonte: Let’s make that three top 15 finishes in a row. Petty Enterprises really have shown they could be a contender with the right crew chief in place.

Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR): Despite his DNF Sunday night, and David Reutimann’s accident, they have made the last 6 races, qualifying in the top 25 most of the time. With the impending addition of Joe Gibbs Racing to Toyota, the tide could be turning for MWR.

Unimpressive:

Jeff Gordon: Three out of the last four races he has been in an accident. Not since his rookie year has Gordon had this many problems. Not sure what the problem is but this time his mistake cost David Reutimann a possible top ten and could cost Ricky Rudd the rest of his short career (Rudd separated his shoulder in the accident). But since these races don’t count for Gordon, look for him to get the eye of the tiger when the playoffs start.

California Motor Speedway: I have never really liked racing out there, but one race a year was good enough, the seats were full, races sold out, but since they now have two races a year, no one bothers to show up, besides racing on Labor Day weekend should be at Darlington. I miss the Southern 500… it was the best.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Too little too late, his “aggressive” driving as the media has put it was a good showing for him, but the engine woes and the no care attitude of his crew chief (Tony Eury Jr.) will probably keep him out of the chase. Looks like NASCAR will have to make the Chase the top 15 cars next year.

ESPN: A week does not go by with out something horrible from these guys. A restart is exciting, so exciting that it should be shown on television. There were so many restarts missed last night that I cannot remember them all. And with all of the misses you had Dr. Jerry Punch saying the green just flew as you see the cars heading to turn 1.
