Bristol: The Toughest Ticket in NASCAR

August 23, 2007

Richard Petty described the Bristol Motor Speedway better than anyone I have ever heard. He said it was like "Jet fighters in a gymnasium." If you could only see one race of the year, you couldn't pick a better one than this hot August night in Tennessee

A trip to Bristol requires a lot of prior planning. First, you've got to have tickets. It's not like you can show up at the window and say, "I'd like four seats high up in the Earnhardt Terrace, preferably by the aisle." This event has been sold out for months. If you've waited this long to start looking for tickets, consider planning to attend next years event. If your heart is set on being in the stands Saturday night, you could head out to the track and look for someone selling tickets outside the speedway. You may pay several hundred dollars for a seat that would cost you a hundred thirty at the window and even then there are no guarantees of getting a seat.

Many people who make last minute decisions to attend a NASCAR event take their chance on one of the ticket brokers you can find selling seats on the internet. Although there are many reputable companies out there, caution is the watch word. There are several scammers out there willing to take your hard earned money. If you choose this route make sure you look for certain things in a ticket seller. How long have they been in business? Do they offer online and phone support? Do they have a physical address? Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau? I checked prices on one of the reputable outlets this morning. They had tickets all over the speedway that ranged in pricing from just over a hundred thirty to near eight hundred dollars. The better seats will cost more. They also offer FedEx Priority for fourteen bucks. It's conceivable you could get tickets for the Saturday race if you placed your order by Thursday.

A few years back I bought tickets from an individual selling them on eBay. Several years ago I bought a pair of seats in the Yarborough Terrace from a guy in Michigan for forty dollars over face price. I got lucky. Ticket prices on eBay earlier this morning ranged from under three hundred to well over a thousand.

If you are like me and need to squeeze the dollar for every spending value in it, the best bet may be to submit a bid to the speedway for season tickets. The highest priced ticket package this way is $ 414. That gets you seats at both Nextel Cup and Busch (or whatever it will be in ‘08) races, March and August. You must get your bids in by the end of October. The speedway is very specific about the format of your bid. If you are interested, check out the website for Bristol Motor Speedway.

A nice option with a nice price tag to go with it is the package tour. There are several operators out there who offer a full VIP package of services which include tickets, transportation, lodging, and in some cases pit and garage passes. Plan on spending better than a thousand for one of these deals.

The other thing to consider when planning a trip to the speedway is lodging. If you are just making plans to go to Bristol today, it's likely the closest hotel you will find will be more than fifty miles from the track. If you are planning for the ‘08 race, you stand a good chance of getting much closer, but don't wait too long.

I know there are a lot of new fans out there who have never been to a NASCAR event. You are cheating yourself of the full experience. Yes, that wide screen High Definition television brings an awesome picture into your home where you are a short stroll to the fridge. Yes, you have a nice air conditioned room with a soft seat where the animal of your choice curls up at your feet. That's not even a warm up for the sights, sounds and smells of Bristol.

The difference between seeing it on TV and being there is like standing on the sand dunes watching the ocean, or body surfing the waves back to the beach.

Start your week off right... Attend the race of your choice!
