Hendrick’s Wicked Web

July 23, 2007

Joe Jacobs - SCR

Silly season started like it had started the last few years, however with one large addition. The much anticipated decision was made by Dale Earnhardt Jr. to leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) and to join Hendrick Motorsports (HMS).

We will find out in the next five seasons (the length of Earnhardt’s contract) if he will be a series champion or just pull a win off here and there. His legions of fans, most of them will follow him but there are a select few that will not follow and find a new driver to follow because they cannot be fans of Hendrick Motorsports.

Fans should commend Dale Jr. for the move he chose to make. He wants to win championships and there is not a better place than Hendrick Motorsports to do that.

But there are a few problems that could arise. The team already has two superstars in its stable. Four time champion Jeff Gordon, and 2006 champion Jimmie Johnson. Is there really room there for another superstar?

Egos will play a part in the team, no matter how un-egotistical Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are. Gordon and Johnson both know their place in the team (whose top dog).

With the addition of Earnhardt it will upset that balance and if Junior runs great next season and Gordon or Johnson run poor, the balance will change and the egos will appear.

That could upset the delicate stability that has produced so many wins and championships at HMS.

In all the changes at HMS Kyle Busch has become the odd man out this year and for years to come. He has had a bad attitude, but also tons of talent and he is extremely young. But in it all he feels pushed aside and probably has that right to feel that way. He should find a team that is capable of winning races and potentially championships, maybe even quicker than Junior at HMS.

The thing Busch needs the most is someone to mentor him and reign in that bad attitude and to get him to focus. I have said it numerous times, I believe Kyle Busch will win a championship before Dale Jr., and Rick Hendrick has made a huge mistake.

So the next few seasons will be a joy to watch. Can Hendrick Motorsports keep its composure and still remain dominant or will they fall from grace? Only time will tell.
