Should Martin Race and Should Jr. Own?

March 16, 2007

Mark Martin is currently leading the Nextel Cup points; which brings to the forefront one major question, will he race or will he go?

Everyone knows that Martin has never won a Nextel Cup Championship, nor has he won the Daytona 500. Even though he has never won the championship and currently leads the points, Martin insists that he is not going run the complete Cup schedule in 2007.

So should Martin give it one more shot and run the complete schedule? The answer to that is easy; Martin should race as long as he is leading the points. If he does not play it conservative and lets it all hang out it’s possible he could win it all in 2007.

On the flip side though Martin can not drive forever and it seems every year that he starts off strong and tends to taper off as the season goes on. He must ask himself a couple of question;

1.) I am currently leading the points should I get out of the race car? His answer should be a simple NO!!!

2.) Is it possible that I could win it all in 2007? His answer should be a sure fire    YES!!!

This might be his best shot at winning a championship and deep down Martin knows that, with Hendrick horsepower and the big money backing of Bobby Ginn (Martins Car owner) they could easily be the sleeper team of the season.

If Martin is leading the points after this weekends race at Atlanta, one would have to assume the he will be at Bristol to race, but if he falls from the point lead one should assume he probably will be at home watching it on TV.

Either way it is a decision Martin has to make just like Dale Earnhardt Jr. has to decide if he really wants primary ownership in Dale Earnhardt Inc (DEI).

The real question though is does Dale Earnhardt Jr. deserve primary ownership (51 percent) of DEI (his fathers company)? Second question is he ready for the responsibility?

He is currently running a small Busch Series team, which is doing fair, they are on there second driver in less than two years.  But the problem will lie in stepping up to running a three-car operation in the Nextel Cup Series from his current one car Busch Series team (yes he does field cars in other series but it still does not compare).

SCR is looking for writers in all the series we cover, if interested email us at scr@stockcarreview.com to receive further information.

It takes a lot of work, effort and maturity to take on such a task. It is not just a job it is a life. Running those three teams take up your whole life just ask his former teammate and like I have said many times before, Junior loves to make television shows, movies and doing his radio show. Where will he find the time to do all of that plus take care of three Cup teams plus a Busch Series program? Oh yeah, he also has to drive the race car as well. It’s a lot to take on.

Will he be ready in the future, most definitely but not until later in his career when he wants to take a step back from driving and start running a company the size of DEI. That is the only way that Earnhardt Jr. will have the long run of success that he is looking for in driving and in team ownership.
