My Christmas Wish List for NASCAR

December 20, 2006

Joe Jacobs - SCR

As we get closer to Christmas there are a few things I have on my Christmas wish list, my NASCAR Christmas list.

1.) I want NASCAR to take back the Labor Day race from California give it back to Darlington and make it the new Sunday night Labor Day tradition. California is a major market but the majority of people do not take racing seriously enough to allow for two races. I have not seen a full crowd there in many years.

2.) With the extra date, there must be a new short track race added to the schedule. NASCAR needs more short tracks and non-cookie cutter tracks. It does not matter where the short track is. It could even be in California,  maybe that would bring back interest to that major market.

3.) The Busch Series would no longer allow Nextel Cup drivers who are in the top 35 in point’s race more than 5 Busch races all year.  Over the last few years the Busch Series has become Nextel Cup Jr. It should be a feeder series and a place for young drivers to hone their skills and become noticed and move up.

4.) Plate racing would return to the aero package of the 2000-2001 seasons. It was simply the best plate racing since the conceptions of the plate its self.  Fans enjoyed the close racing, drivers did not like it but they did it. And to my knowledge this package did not cause any deaths (including Dale Earnhardt) nor did it cause any more big accidents than any other aero package.

5.) Once again allow drivers to have a personality, if they want to shove and fight and curse, let it be. Television could run on a 7 second delay to edit out the foul words but fans love to see their drivers show emotion.

If someone wants to point their finger or shake their fist at a drive it should no be punished.

6.) The Chase would have an NCAA tournament feel. The drivers in the chase need their own point system. Winning a race in the chase would be awarded handsomely. After 5 races the field could be cut down to 5 drivers or anyone with in 100 points of the leader.

These are just a few of my Christmas wishes for NASCAR.

And from all of us at SCR, We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
