Editors Note: “He Said, She Said” is a new feature on SCR where Everett Mugg and Sharon Bundy will discuss opposite side of an issue or topic going on in NASCAR. The two do not know the topic ahead of time but can choose which side they would like to support. Once in a while the two may agree on a topic. Please feel free to email Everett or Sharon with your feedback. We will also include and email where you can make suggestions on topics or what can be done to improve the column. We hope you enjoy the first edition of “He Said, She Said.”

He Said, She Said: Team Orders for a Championship?

November 10, 2006

Everett Mugg and Sharon Bundy - SCR

He Said: Currently, it would appear that none of the multi-car teams have more than 1 car with a good chance at winning the Nextel Cup, discounting those who are more than 100 points out (actually 105 in Harvick’s case). Will the other teams owned by those same five owners be sacrificed for the benefit of the contenders? Will their drivers let team members past them while blocking competitors? Will they do “tests” during the last two races to see what works?

She Said: I don't think team orders are in play, now if it was a couple of weeks before the Chase, I would say yes, especially if there was a position to be gained in the standings and it was the difference between getting into the Chase or being locked out. But once in the Chase, you're on your own.

Hendrick Motorsports:

He Said: Hendrick would sacrifice either the No. 5 car or the No. 25 given that Kyle Busch is out of it and not only is Brian Vickers “out of it” but he’s out at Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the season. In fact both Busch, (Kyle, not Kurt), and Vickers, took only two tires on one pit stop midway during the Texas race when everyone else took four in an apparent attempt to “test” the results for Gordon and Johnson.

She Said: It is obvious that Hendrick Motorsports does not practice team orders. The four teammates race each other very hard. And of course you have to look back at Loudon (New Hampshire) to see my point. Brian Vickers was in no way going to simply move over and let Jeff Gordon by. At one point Vickers was faster and Jeff whined that his teammate was racing him too hard and he was in the Chase and I suppose that meant he should get preference on track.  Gordon would not have simply moved over to let someone go by, teammate or not. And at the restrictor plate tracks, it was common to see the No 24. and the No. 48 basically hang each other out or at the least stop working together altogether. So I believe team orders are no way in play there.

Joe Gibbs Racing:

He Said: Joe Gibbs Racing has no choice as Tony Stewart would run over his grandmother in the pits for a win (or another biscuit) and so far has cut no rookie, much less his “teammate” a break.

She Said: The only team orders I can see at Gibbs, is Stewart is the boss and that is that. Maybe not exactly like that, but being the veteran driver of the organization and throwing in the fact he is a two-time champion carries some weight (no pun intended).

Roush Racing:

He Said: Roush? He lost one of his only two Cup Champions he had last year, presumably over contract disputes. It is now rumored that Greg Biffle will take over the Yates No. 88 ride next year. Mark Martin has bolted to Chevy, so who does that leave. Cousin Carl, the grinner… He ruined Biffle’s chances last year at Atlanta, one doubts he will help Kenseth. Besides, Roush, like Childress seems more interested in running Busch races than Cup races.

She Said: Normally, I would say Roush drivers would follow team orders, but the teams just aren't running strong enough to influence the race or even help the Chasers on track, so Matt Kenseth is on his own there. The organization has bigger problems than who is helping who or who will move over for who.

Richard Childress Racing

He Said: Richard Childress shot his wad this year running top Cup drivers for a Busch Championship. Burton won’t tank for Harvick and Harvick has been focused on yet another Busch title. Maybe when Harvick and Childress shake off the Dale Earnhardt ghost they can actually run for a CUP championship and be the team that Earnhardt always knew they could be when he selected Harvick.

She Said: No team orders at Richard Childress Racing either, Harvick is a lot like Stewart, he would run his grandmother over to advance his position on track as well. I think Burton would be more inclined to move over on the racetrack, not for the fact that Harvick is a teammate, but the fear of being wrecked.

Dale Earnhardt Inc.:

He Said: DEI doesn’t really have the ability to influence a race with Truex although one thinks they would if they could.  Waltrip may still owe DEI something but it is unlikely he would help dale Earnhardt Jr. given the number dispute.

She Said: DEI has no one. Although, I think if at a plate track, Michael Waltrip would latch onto the bumper of Dale Jr. to head to the front and would push Junior to the front if possible. Those former teammates work well together on those tracks if they can get hooked up. I do not think there is a number dispute between DEI and Waltrip. He wanted to buy the number owned by DEI and they said no, case closed... I suppose Mikey feels that the No. 15 is synonymous with him and no one else.

He Said: There are of course other "alliances". Hendrick sells motors and gives technical assistance to other teams. Roush and Yates have some type of agreement as well. Tony Stewart is big buddies with Dale Earnhardt.................

She Said: I just don't see any teams helping any of the Chasers at this point, the spotlight is on them and not the 33 other drivers and any chance they can take the spotlight away from the top ten drivers, they will. Tony Stewart is the perfect example of that.
